About Us – Tata Crucible UK

Tata Crucible Quiz is a part of the Tata group’s engagement with the youth as a knowledge initiative to encourage lateral associations, speed of thought and out-of-the-box thinking. The quiz seeks to bring together the sharpest young minds to take on the heat of a tough business quiz. It made its debut in India in 2004-05 and generated a huge response in the very first year itself. It has now become an annual event, held separately for corporates and campuses each year and has successfully completed 10 years as the premier business Quiz of the country. Tata Crucible Campus Quiz made its international debut with the Singapore edition in 2007 and has been running successfully for the last 6 years, with the 7th edition scheduled in November 2013. The UK edition was launched successfully in 2008 and has been running annually since then.

The UK edition of the quiz is a single location event open to participants, in teams of two each from the same college/university and they register online for the same. The desirous teams then assemble at a common venue and all the teams will be subjected to a written elimination round of 20-25 questions at the start. Out of these, 8 top teams will be then invited on the stage (normally 6 top scoring teams and 2 teams from a quick wild card round) for 5 to 6 rounds of live quiz on stage from which the winners will be crowned. The rounds consist of questions from the world of international business and economy, including corporates, personalities, brands, markets, etc. The emphasis in the questions is not on the obvious, but lateral thinking and associations. The Quiz Master, Mr. Giri Balasubramaniam, a.k.a. Pickbrain has successfully conducted the Tata Crucible Quiz in UK for the past 5 years along with India & Singapore over many years. He is known for his wit, humour and incisive style of quizzing.

The last UK edition of the quiz in 2012 saw participation of over 170 students representing 30 leading UK universities including London Business School, Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester, London School of Economics, Imperial College, Surrey, Aston, Warwick, Cambridge, Bath, Cardiff, Coventry, University College London and many others. The team of Anup Nair and Michael Doroszenko from The University of Strathclyde, Glasgow emerged as champions for the third consecutive year at this event and was awarded £4,000 as cash prize. The team of Owen James and Shane Clancy from London Business School took the second place, while University Of Manchester students Max Hird and Aparajit Basu took the third place. The two teams took home £2,000 and £1,500 respectively. The winners and the second runners up team from the UK edition then travelled to India in April 2013 for an international final with the top two teams each from the Singapore and India editions of the Quiz.
